What's a wiki?
A wiki is a Web site that can be easily edited by numerous people. Some businesses use them for work teams, schools use them for group projects. Some wikis are open to the public like Wikipedia. This wiki will be open to the public. Its topic will be anything and everything Fowler, California. Many many other cities have founded wikis in their communities or neighborhoods. The most well-known is Daviswiki, but near by towns such as Merced have nascent wikis as well.

Why a wiki?
This city wiki is designed to be casual, and to capture the local flavor of an area. Fowler has many "official" sites such as sites for the Fowler City Council, Fowler Chamber of Commerce and Fowler schools. But a wiki tries to capture the in-between culture of an area— the best places to take friends, a church with fun services, or famous residents from Fowler.

What about security, predators, robots?
City wikis work because its citizens work together to add pages and to keep them updated. But if a certain computer user abuses this opportunity, he or she can be blocked from editing this site. Although we wouldn't want to do this, a wiki could be closed off to registered users if it is necessary to protect against automated computer vandals.

What could I add to this wiki?
This depends on who you are. At this point it is wide open to ideas, however this wiki could use help adding basic information such as a few restaurants, shops, history and pictures. If you a business owner or patron of a business, please create a page for yourself here.

What is the history of this wiki?
This wiki is only a few weeks old! But it began as a project through the Fowler Library. A library is a wonderful institution to found a wiki because it is designed to create community, and also connect people with information. Also this wiki project—like the books, videos, other items and services at the library— is FREE and not-for-profit.
